Patient #89

DeckerMed Outreach Clinic, Mjini Village, Meru County

Patient 89, a 53-year-old woman with abdominal pain reported being operated SEVEN TIMES previously for a hernia. Physical exam and ultrasound confirmed adhesions and mesh migration. DeckerMed referred her to MeruTeaching & Referral Hospital where surgery was performed by Dr. Elias Nyaga. “The hernia was repaired with Prolene mesh and the abdominal wall was reconstructed. The outcome was successful and Mrs returned to her village. She resumed her work as an entrepreneur and life as a grandmother of two.” DeckerMed Africa Trust covered the entire cost, as the patient was without NHIF insurance and her need for treatment was compelling.

Patient #112

When Faith went into labour with her first child in a village with no midwife or health facility, the nearest hospital is 30 minutes away. After a prolonged, painful and obstructed labour, Faith gave birth to a healthy girl. Soon afterward she started leaking urine which developed into obstetric fistula.

Faith isolated herself due to the unpleasant odour. “I became withdrawn and shamed. Because of low self- esteem, I kept quiet,” she says. She was abandoned by her husband. “I had to stop selling tea – my only source of income, because people were not comfortable around me.” Her life changed when she attended the free DeckerMed Africa Trust medical camp. Faith was operated successfully and has returned to selling tea and is

reintegrated with her circle of friends. This surgery is life altering for thousands of
women like Faith.
